The best thickness for a pouch that holds edible oil is between 72 and 110 microns. At that gauge the film blocks oxygen plus water vapour, resists tearing and still keeps the price low. A five layer sheet - polyethylene glued to nylon or a stack of polyamide, low density polyethylene but also aluminium foil - landing at 80-120 microns stops almost all air and damp (oxygen transfer stays under 10-50 cc per square metre per day). For hard fats like vanaspati, a thinner 75-100 micron sheet made from high molecular high-density polyethylene blended with linear low density polyethylene is enough if the pouch holds 200-500 millilitres. The film passes the Bureau of Indian Standards puncture as well as drop tests but it must be coloured to stop light from turning the fat rancid.
