In sheet metal fabrication, conventional hemming is a two-step process used to fold the edge of a part back onto itself. This creates a safe, rounded edge, hides burrs, and significantly increases the part's stiffness.Unlike the specialized "joggle" or "curling" tools we discussed, conventional hemming is usually performed on a press brake using a standard or specialized hemming die set.The Two-Step Process The Pre-Bend (Acute Bend): An acute-angle punch (usually 30°) creates an initial bend in the metal. The Flattening (Closing): The pre-bent flange is placed under a flat "hammer" or flattening die, which presses it down to the desired gap.
