Core cutting in concrete is a method used for creating openings for pipes, wires, ventilating or air conditioning vents to fit through. Core drilling is basically another way of saying the cutter is making precise, circular holes. The core cutter method is a test used to determine the in-situ dry density of soil. It is only used in fine-grained cohesive soils without stones. The test requires cylindrical core cutters about 130 mm long and 100 mm in diameter. The bulk density of soil can be easily calculated using this method. Core samples are small portions of a formation taken from an existing well and used for geologic analysis. The sample is to determine porosity, permeability, fluid content, geologic age, and probable productivity of oil from the site. Core drilling employs a hollow punch or drill bit to remove a clean core of material for examination. It's commonly used in mining, concrete work, and other applications to determine the quality, density, strength, and various other properties of a material.
