Fire pumps are an essential part of many water-based fire protection systems. They are used to increase the pressure (measured in psi and bar) of a water source when that source is not adequate for the system it's supplying.Types of fire pumps include: horizontal split case, vertical split case, vertical in-line, vertical turbine, and end suction.The impeller is powered to rotate within the volute, creating centrifugal force which hurls the water from the impeller eye outward through the impeller. The volute is a spiral shaped flow passage surrounding the impeller, which collects the water from the impeller and guides it to pump discharge.In many buildings, the fire sprinklers serving a commercial building might not be able to control or extinguish the fires that start without adequate amounts of water or water pressure.
