Product Details
Hemming is a two-step process used to fold a metal edge back on itself for safety (removing sharp edges) or to increase the stiffness of a part. In press brake operations, this is typically done using specialized hemming sets consisting of a top punch and a bottom die.Types of Hemming Tools Two-Stage Hemming Sets: These are the most common industrial solution. Phase 1 (Pre-bend): The punch and die create a sharp 30° or 45° acute bend in the sheet metal. Phase 2 (Flattening): The workpiece is then placed between the flat surfaces of the tool (often a "moving" die or a specialized flattening area) to crush the bend flat. Spring-Loaded (U-Type) Hemming Dies: These dies feature a spring-loaded top section. The first stroke creates the acute bend, and as the pressure increases, the spring compresses to allow the flat part of the die to flatten the hem in a single setup. Dutch Folds (Open Hems): For applications requiring a radius at the fold rather than a flat crush, "Open Hem" tools are used. These maintain a small gap between the folded layers.
