Q. What is the basic process of a laser?
A.A laser makes light stronger using stimulated emission of radiation. Energy enters a gain medium like solid, liquid or gas; causing electrons in atoms to jump to higher energy levels. When electrons return to normal, they release energy as photons. One photon hitting another excited atom releases more photons with the same wavelength plus phase creating a coherent light beam. Mirrors create an optical cavity where light bounces back and forth growing stronger each time. Some amplified light exits through a partly reflective mirror as the focused laser beam used in many applications.
