Q. What is the working principle of STP?
A.Sewage treatment plants work on a very simple premise. It purifies dirty water in stages. Wastewater finds its way inside the plant and passes through the screening in the preliminary treatment to remove big items—plastics, cloth, or sticks. Thereafter, the water passes over a settling tank, where heavy solids settle down at the bottom, while oils and grease float above. This is the primary treatment stage.The aeration tank comes next to the wastewater line. Air is injected into this tank to nurture bacteria; these good bacteria will consume the organic wastes and degrade them. This process is called biological or secondary treatment. Water flows into another tank. Sedimentation happens here. Bacteria and solids settle down. Clean water rises to the top. It is collected from above.Thus the water may now continue for the final step, which is called tertiary treatment. This removes residual chemicals, nutrients, or germs by different methods such as sand filters, UV light, or chlorine.The treated water will now be safe to be treated on the recycling aspect, such as gardening with flushing, or it could be safely discharged into rivers. The sludge collected from the different tanks is treated and can be used sometimes as fertiliser or fuel. This whole entire process helps in suiting the environment for clean water resources.
