A Compression Testing Machine is a mechanical device used to determine the compressive strength of materials such as concrete, cement, metals, plastics, and other construction materials. It measures how a material behaves under axial compressive loads until failure. These machines are widely used in civil engineering, material testing laboratories, and quality control. Components Load Frame The main structure that supports the entire machine. Typically made of steel to withstand high compressive forces. Platen or Plates Two flat surfaces between which the specimen is placed. Ensure uniform load distribution on the sample. Loading Mechanism Can be manual (screw type) or hydraulic/electromechanical. Applies a steadily increasing compressive force to the specimen. Load Measuring System Measures the applied force, usually via a load cell or proving ring. Displays the force digitally or through an analog dial. Control Panel For operating the machine and monitoring parameters. Modern machines allow automatic data logging and rate control. Safety Features Overload protection and emergency stop to prevent accidents. Working Principle The specimen is placed between the upper and lower platens. The load is gradually applied through the loading mechanism. The force at which the specimen fails (cracks or crushes) is recorded.
