Frequently Asked Questions about Plastic Welding Machine
What are the main types of plastic welding machines
Plastic welding machines fall into five basic types - hot air welders, hot iron welders, extrusion welders, ultrasonic welders and high-frequency (RF) welders. A hot air welder works - blowing air that has been heated to about 400 - 600 °C through a narrow nozzle. The hot air softens plastics like PVC plus the softened edges of sheets - tarpaulins or roofing membranes, for example - fuse together. The tool works well on curved seams. A hot iron welder has a high wattage heated tip or a tip that feeds a rod. It is used for small repairs on tanks or flat sheets and is convenient for occasional or do-it-yourself work. An extrusion welder melts a filler rod but also pushes the melted material into the joint. It is meant for sheet thicker than 5 mm and is used in industry for square edge butt welds. An ultrasonic welder presses the parts together while it transmits high frequency vibrations. The heat created in a few seconds welds rigid plastics like ABS. This process is common in automotive assembly. A high frequency RF welder places thin films between electrodes as well as heats them with electromagnetic energy. The plastic melts only along the joint line and forms a seam that looks continuous. This method is chosen for medical bags or similar thin products. The choice of machine depends on the type of plastic, its thickness or the task that needs to be done.
What can you weld with a plastic welder?
Plastic welders heat thermoplastic parts until they soften then press the soft areas together so the material flows and later hardens as one piece. The method works on polyethylene, polypropylene, polyvinyl chloride, ABS, high density polyethylene, low density polyethylene, polycarbonate plus nylon. The machines repair tanks, pipes, boats, tarpaulins and car parts. Hot-air welders but also extrusion welders join HDPE besides PP sheets that later serve as geomembranes and chemical tanks. Ultrasonic welders join ABS or PC to build electronic housings. Hot-plate welders join PP or PE sheets to form containers. High-frequency welders seal PVC film to produce tents as well as medical bags. Choose a welding rod or wire made of the same plastic as the part, wash the joint area and confirm that the two plastics will bond. Thermosets like epoxy do not melt or therefore cannot be welded.
Is plastic welding strong?
Plastic welding produces a joint that is strong and durable when the work is carried out correctly - the joint normally regains 80 - 98 % of the strength of the original sheet or pipe plus frequently outperforms glue or bolts. When HDPE, PP or PVC are joined with heat, the long plastic chains knit back together - the resulting seam resists acids, rain, sunlight and impact and allows tanks, pipes, small craft but also car bumpers to remain in service for years. The strength of the weld depends on four points. The surface must be clean of oil and dust and must be lightly abraded. The filler rod has to be the identical plastic as the parent part. The torch or welding shoe must operate at the precise melt temperature for that plastic. The operator must select the correct technique - thick sections, for example, require the extrusion method. If any one of those steps is omitted - if the surface is dirty, the rod differs in grade or the heat is too low - the joint can drop below half the strength of the parent sheet as well as will crack under load. Tensile tests show that a sound weld can exceed the strength of the original sheet and chemical tests confirm that the welded zone withstands aggressive liquids. Where failure cannot be tolerated, the work is executed in accordance with DVS 2203 so that every joint is dependable.
What is the best method of welding plastic?
Picking the right way to weld plastic depends on the kind of plastic, how big the part is, how many parts you need and how strong the joint has to be. When you have to make large numbers of small, thin parts from ABS, polycarbonate or nylon at high speed, ultrasonic welding works very well. The process completes in seconds, produces strong joints plus runs automatically without added filler. Hot-plate welding suits large parts with simple shapes like polyethylene or polypropylene tanks - it gives high strength but needs more time per cycle. Vibration welding joins large, complex assemblies like automotive manifolds and does so reliably. When a high density or polypropylene pipe must be repaired by hand in the field, extrusion welding lays down a bead that matches the strength of the parent material. Select the method according to the task - ultrasonic for precision electronic parts, extrusion for on site repairs. Clean the surfaces and use a filler rod of the same resin - if both steps are followed the joint will reach eighty to one hundred percent of the strength of the base plastic.
What safety precautions are required for plastic welding?
Plastic welding demands clear safety steps because the job involves high heat, fumes, melted plastic and live electricity. Put on heat proof gloves, safety goggles or a face shield, a long sleeved shirt plus long trousers to stop burns and splashes. Wear a respirator or mask rated for organic vapours - when PVC melts it gives off hydrogen chloride but also other poisons. Work in a room with plenty of air or use a fume extractor to pull hazardous vapours away. Read the material safety data sheet for each plastic and do not weld inside a tight closed space. Remove flammables, clutter as well as dirt from the bench - when a tool is not needed close it and stow it. Check the equipment for damage, confirm the temperature controls work or follow the maker's manual so the tool will not overheat or ignite. Train on scrap first, raise heat in small steps and let the joint cool without force. Keep a Class B fire extinguisher also a first aid kit within reach.
How long does a plastic weld last?
A weld done correctly in plastic will stay intact for ten to thirty years or for the whole life of the original sheet, even in hard service like tanks, pipes and car parts - the joint reaches eighty to ninety eight percent of the strength of the base plastic. Hot-air or extrusion welds on HDPE or PP geomembranes resist sunlight, chemicals plus earth pressure for an unlimited time if the operator first cleans the seam, chooses a rod of the same resin and sets the heat at the right value. Car bumpers rebuilt with extrusion rods hold up to impact but also weather for five to fifteen years. The joint will last only if the surface is scrubbed free of grease and dust, the filler rod melts at the same point as the parent sheet, the torch temperature is held in the narrow band that avoids overheating as well as the finished seam is checked with a bend or peel test. A careless weld turns brittle and parts within months. When the work is done under cover or by the book, the seam outlives most adhesives and survives vibration, swings in temperature also long exposure to sun and chemicals.
Is PlasticWeld waterproof?
PlasticWeld, a well known epoxy putty made by J-B Weld, resists water and works on most plastics, composites, PVC, fiberglass plus related materials. It hardens in five minutes and reaches full strength of 3,900 PSI after one hour - the joint will not peel apart when it gets wet. Those qualities suit it for stopping leaks in tanks, boats, pipes but also outdoor equipment. Once cured, the seal tolerates damp air, swings from - 40°F to 200°F and many chemicals but it is not designed for endless submersion the way certain marine epoxies are. Check the bond on a small spot first, because the putty will not stick to polyethylene or polypropylene. For a lasting watertight repair, scrub as well as abrade the surface, blend equal parts resin and hardener and let the mixture cure completely before you place it under water. Plumbers or motorists say the repair holds for years.
What is the best plastic welding method?
No single way of welding plastic suits every job. The right choice depends on the plastic itself, the size and shape of the part, how many units you need plus how strong the joint must be. Ultrasonic welding works well when you need speed, accuracy and a leak proof seam. A cycle lasts only a few seconds. It gives clean joints on small or medium parts made from ABS, nylon or similar thermoplastics but also it leaves almost no flash. Car and medical makers often use it. Hot-plate welding fits large, awkward shapes like HDPE or PP tanks. It forgives warped edges as well as delivers a strong bond but the process is slow and produces flash. Extrusion welding rebuilds or repairs pipes or tanks outdoors. A hand held tool feeds filler rod into a prepared groove to form a tough, watertight seam. Vibration welding joins big, lopsided parts quickly and without soot. For home or workshop jobs, hot air extrusion is cheap also flexible. Pick the method that matches the task - ultrasonic for long production runs - hot plate or extrusion for heavy duty work.
What is a plastic welding gun used for?
A plastic welding gun melts thermoplastic materials with hot air or - pushing molten plastic out of a nozzle so that two pieces fuse into one solid joint - the result is a repair or a new part that has no cracks or seams. Body shops use the tool most often on bumpers, dashboards and fuel tanks, because it lets them restore the original strength of the plastic instead of buying new parts. In construction plus plumbing the same tool welds PVC or HDPE pipe, fittings and liners so that the joints do not leak. Factories use it to build tanks, containers, flat sheet assemblies but also geomembrane liners. Boat yards, farms, sign shops and roofing crews also rely on it for hull patches, water troughs, plastic letters as well as sealed roof sheets. The gun heats both the parent plastic and a filler rod made of the same material until the surface reaches 300 - 600°C - when the plastic cools it becomes one piece again. Hot-air models suit thin sheet work. Extrusion models suit heavy stock thicker than five millimetres. Kits that add extra nozzles or rods let one gun cover many jobs. The welds cost little, avoid new raw material, last long and withstand chemicals and vibration.
