One common type of positive displacement pump used for applications is the triplex plunger pump that consist of three plungers driven by a single prime mover. The parallel use of three plungers gives the triplex pump a discharge for every 120 degrees rotation of the prime mover.A triplex piston pump is a reciprocating positive displacement pump that uses only three pistons. This type of pump is often used for high pressure applications e.g. hydraulic systems. Due to its robust design, it is capable of pumping high viscosity fluids and fluids which contain solids.A standard triplex pump is driven by an A.C. Motor with a crank-shaft and connecting rod assembly to convert the rotation of the motor shaft to the reciprocating motion of the pistons or plungers; the mechanics are similar to that of an internal combustion engine.
