What is the minimum thickness of screed concrete?
The minimum thickness of screed concrete depends on its type and purpose. Traditional bonded screeds usually get set at not less than 25 mm; this thickness ensures a proper bond to the base. Where unevenness presents problems, slight extra thickness may be required. Unbonded screeds are placed on a damp-proof membrane and need at least a 50 mm thickness. The additional thickness helps prevent cracking. Floating screeds are applied over insulation. These require a minimum thickness of 65 mm. If heating is included in the floor, it moves up to 75 mm. Self-levelling screeds are thinner, as they can be applied from 2 mm to the maximum of 15 mm thickness. Mostly, they serve to smoothen the surface before final floor finishes. The other minimum thickness is also determined by concrete strength and load anticipated. Thinner screeds require careful handling to avoid early damage. Guidelines for each type should be strictly followed. Good thickness selection will enhance longevity and performance. Always consult a standard and professional before screeding any surface.
How much does screed cost?
For a standard screed, costs would vary according to location and types of materials. Most traditional sand and cement screed is common and economical. The screed that is very basic would cost about ₹30-60 for floor screeding work carried out by the contractors, no matter if general or special. The more advanced screed types cost more. Polymer-modified screed or self-levelling screed ranges from ₹80 to ₹150 per square foot. The exact price depends on the thickness and the work required. These types offer smoother and quicker finishes. They are used in commercial buildings. They are also used in hospitals. These places need high precision and clean surfaces. Screed thickness also affects costs. A thin screed would work out at a cheaper rate per square foot than a thick one. Further, if surface preparation, levelling, and insulation are part of the job, the costs would increase. Labour charges are generally included, but rates vary from city to city and contractor to contractor. In the metro cities, slightly higher costs may be because of transportation and skilled labour. Particularly for large-scale projects, contractors tend to give a better rate. It is recommended to ask for the quotation clearly specifying materials, labour, and other ancillary works required.
How do you calculate cement screed?
To calculate a cement screed, an area measurement has to be made first. Multiply its length by its width, thus obtaining the area in square feet/metres. Then, decide how thick a layer of the screed should be. Convert thickness into meters, if necessary. To find the volume, then, multiply the area by thickness. Suppose one takes a 10 square metre region with a 0.05 metre thickness. The volume will be 0.5 cubic meters. The cement screed usually follows these mixing ratios of 1:3 or 1:4 (cement to sand). Now calculate the cement quantity. For a 1:4 mix, divide that volume by 5. That is the cement share. Multiply it by the density of cement (roughly 1440 kg/m³) to transform it into weight. The remaining four parts are sand. Multiply the volume by 4/5 to obtain the sand quantity. Add 10% more to offset losses. This method would calculate only an approximate amount of cement and sand required. Water is added to get the desired workability. Always round up amounts of materials for safety.
What material is screed?
Usually consisting of cement, sand, and water, screed is mortar. Other materials can occasionally be used, such as lime or different additives; still, a cement-sand screed is the most often used. This produces a flat surface level, somewhat easy application, and a strong mix. Usually covering concrete floors, screeds help to prepare the floor for finishing treatments, including carpeting, vinyl, or tiles. Usually the mixture is for one part cement to three to five parts sand. Water is added to make the mixture workable. In some particular cases, self-levelling screed is used. This screed contains special chemicals that help it flow and level itself. This has proved to be very useful when there is a need for a very flat surface. Anhydrite screed, based on calcium sulphate, may also be used for lighter weight or thermally insulating purposes. This screed will flow easily and dry to a finish that is smooth. Additives such as fibres or mesh may be incorporated for reinforcement and crack resistance. Thus, the choice of screed depends on the kind of building application, load, and the environment. All screeds certainly aim at proper mixing and application towards any favourable result.
What are the two types of screeding?
Screeds often occur in two forms: bound and unbonded. Both are levelling floors but are used differently in practical applications. A bonded screed is laid directly on a concrete slab. A bonding agent ensures that the screed achieves a good bond to the base. It can be laid in thinner sections. It is normally only used where a good bond and load-bearing surface are considered essential. Therefore, areas of heavy foot traffic would best be served by the application of a bonded screed. Conversely, an unbonded screed is laid over a dividing layer—usually composed of polythene or plastic. This enables some relative movement during shrinkage between the screed and the slab and keeps the screed from bonding with the base slab. Usually thicker, an unbonded screed helps to reduce shrinkage-related cracking by means of movement. Both types have advantages; their selection depends on the kind of structure, the loads that the floor shall be subjected to, and the anticipated nature of use.
